Please note that the if four prices are stated against a wine, then these are firstly for a small glass (175ml), then a large glass (250ml), a 500ml carafe and finally a bottle. If there is only one price, then the wine is only available by the bottle. Finca Sophenia Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Argentina) - £3.20, £4.45, £8.80, £13.00 Grown at 4,000 ft altitude right in the high foothills of the Andes in the famous Tupungato district. Deep red colour. Intense aromas of red and black fruits, spicy and mineral hints melt with smoke and vanilla scents. A wine with complexity, structure and great elegance. Valle Perdido Malbec 2006 (Argentina) - £15.95 The Valle Perdido winery in the heart of the Neuquen region of Patagonia harvests the grapes at dawn in order to preserve the varietals characteristics. Aged in oak for up to nine months, the wine shows a deep violet red with vibrant and expressive aromas of red fruit and orange peel. Full bodied and juicy, with elegant tannins and mineral notes. Geoff Merrill Shiraz 2004 (Australia) - £3.65, £5.10, £10.10, £14.95 This fantastic wine is great value and delivers an aroma and palate to show off the full spectrum and complexity of this varietal. Ranging from plum and mulberry fruit with hints of mint and eucalyptus, the flavour is enhanced with cedar and vanilla overtones, from ageing in American oak barrels. Cherry and plum dominate the bouquet, followed by aromas of crushed black pepper, and wild strawberry. Eucalyptus, cedar and cola fill the palate. La Playa Petit Verot Carmenere Cabernet ‘Loud River’ 2005 (Chile) - £3.20, £4.40, £8.75, £12.95 Deep purple colour with some violet hues. The nose is ripe with a nice perfume that includes spice and minerality. Plum and berry nuances are balanced with oak, whilst the flavour is round, juicy and fresh with a good feel. La Playa Merlot 2006 (Chile) - £3.35, £4.60, £9.15, £13.50 Good aromatic intensity and richness of black fruits like plum, leading to notes of menthol and fresh red fruits. In the mouth it is creamy and round, with soft tannins and a long, savory finish. Serve with... an easy companion for a wide variety of meat and pasta dishes, mushrooms, chicken, chilli and cheeses. Denbies Redlands Red Surrey (England) - £26.95 This classic English red blend made from Pinot Noir and Dornfelder is grown on the chalky hillsides above this excellent vineyard near Dorking. A rich and fairly full bodied dry red with bright crimson hues. The smooth palate displays berry fruit characters and delivers a firm finish. Excellent example of greatly improved wine making in the English countryside. Serve with... cold meats, roast duck, rabbit, chicken or Guinea fowl, lamb or pork. Chateau Gachon 2005 (France) - £18.95 The wine is a deep ruby with purple hues and has a soft nose of cherry, cassis, and spice. On the palate it is quite well balanced with a solid tannic structure and a complementary soft mid-palate of ripe red berry fruit. Fleurie ‘la Madone’ Georges Blanc 2007 (France) - £20.95 Fleurie has a distinctly floral bouquet of violets and summer fruits and is perhaps the most approachable and elegant of the Beaujolais Crus. Picked from the best vineyard site in this famous village on the hillside below the ‘Saint Madone’ and made from 100% Gamay grapes, which have enjoyed an excellent exposure to the sunshine and are wonderfully ripe at harvest. Cotes du Rhone ‘Trois Couronnes’ Louis Mousset 2006 (France) - £2.40, £3.35, £6.65, £9.75 Pale crimson colour. Fresh nose, blackcurrant and raspberry fruit with some blackcurrant and coffee bean aromas. Rich spicy oak and good length. Serve with... a perfect match with lasagne, sausages and ratatouille. Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine du Grand Tinel 2005 (France) - £35.95 This famous wine is produced on the stony slopes surrounding the village of Chateauneuf du Pape (translated it means ‘New Castle of the Pope’) and it has a rich and long history of vine cultivation back to 1308. Traditional Châteauneuf is predominantly blended from Grenache with Syrah, Counoise and Mourvèdre, with each adding some additional complexity of wild herbs, cedar and pepper. It has a rustic and richness to the flavour with quite a strong spicy character. Well known for being full-bodied and chunky, Serve with... fuller flavoured red meats particularly game, roasts, stews and rich sauces or strong cheeses. Valpolicella Classico ‘Villa Piazzola’ 2005 (Italy) - £15.95 The vineyards are situated to the north of Verona on hills sloping down to the Adige River. This is a subtle and easy drinking cherry scented red wine produced from the three Valpolicella grape varieties of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara, which are grown on pergola trained vines. Serve with... pasta, meaty risottos, lamb, roasts and stews. Barolo ‘Poderi Scarrone’ 2000 (Italy) - £48.00 The ‘Scarrone’ vineyard benefits from shelter given by the contours of the surrounding hills, allowing warm enough conditions to grow the Nebbiolo grape. The wine is matured in oak for 24 months, is dark ruby red in colour with expansive aromas of very ripe fruit and floral notes. Firm in the mouth with attractive juicy, ripe plummy fruit, sweet tannins and a lengthy finish. Serve with..... perfect with roast beef and lamb, as well as mature cheeses. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo San Antonio 2006 (Italy) - £2.85, £3.95, £7.80, £11.50 The ‘quintessential’ all-round Italian red, selected from the l`Aquila province of Abruzzo on the Adriatic coast. Intense purple in colour with intense aromas and rich, robust characteristics typical of the region. Very spicy with cherryish flavours, rich and well rounded, a portion was aged in oak to soften the palate and add some smoky character. Serve with... great with cold meats, salami and pastas with meat or tomato sauces. Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir ‘Roaring Meg’ 2006 (New Zealand) - £26.50 Named after and as a tribute to the famous dam on the Kawarau river. The fruit for this wine comes from selected premium Central Otago vineyards. A lovely mix of red and black berry fruits with further complexity gained from oak spice. Tannins rise gracefully out of the mid palate to finish the wine, balanced by the wine’s acidity and flavour to produce a long fruit driven finish. Vintage 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards BRONZE. Laibach Pinotage 2006 (South Africa) - £20.50 The Daddy of all wines, this is one of South Africa’s finest examples of this grape variety. Winemaker Francois van Zyl is good mates with Beyers Truter (the king of Pinotage) and has styled this version to capture big bold plum flavours and complex fruit whilst still retaining a smooth creamy texture. Aged in oak the wine is deep purple in colour, exhibiting lovely juicy flavours. Warm and pleasing on the palate, this medal winner is Pinotage at its very best. Vintage 2005 Internationla Wine Challenge 2007 BRONZE, Decanter World Wine Awards SILVER. Serve with.... any big meat, casserole or spicy dishes. Ochavo Old Vine Garnacha 2006 (Spain) - £2.50, £3.40, £6.75, £9.95 An elegant wine with a prominence of black wild fruits, tangerine and melon. Very clean and powerful on the palate and balanced by matured and sweet tannins, which contribute full body and a velvety finish. Serve with... roast chicken, vegetable bakes, as well as hard cheeses. Marques de Caceres Crianza 2004 (Spain) - £3.65, £5.10, £10.10, £14.95 Crianza wines are aged in oak barrels for 15-18 months, depending on the vintage and in bottle for at least 14 months. This wine has a deep ruby colour, is powerful, well balanced with softness and structure. Blackcurrants and forest fruits mingle on the palate with a subtle touch of vanilla on the nose as well as in the mouth. The tannins are well defined, velvety, soft and silky smooth. Serve with... a fine accompaniment to any dish especially roast, stewed or braised meats as well as game and cheese. Organic Red Wine Sangiovese Boira ‘Organic’ 2006 (Italy) - £3.40, £4.75, £9.45, £13.95 Sangiovese comes in many guises in the hands of Italian winemakers and this is given the classic treament with the added bonus of organic status. Dense, ruby red in colour, intense flavours of stone fruit and jam like qualities. Harmonious and silky tannins give a well structured body with a luscious, fruit back palate leading to a long lingering finish. Serve with... great with beef and tomato based dishes. Laibach Merlot Blend ‘The Ladybird’ 2006 (South Africa) - £21.95 Named ‘The Ladybird’ in tribute to the 3,000 Ladybirds that are released each January to combat the presence of the mealybug and protect the vines. These little creatures are a remarkable deterrent and avoid the need for the use of pesticides to eradicate pests. Loaded with an array of ripe and rounded fruits, this wine has a complex nose with hints of spice, chocolate and mocha. A traditional maturation in French oak barrique adds structure to the plum and mineral complexity and a lingering finish. GOLD medal and ‘best organic wine’ of show, Swiss Airline Wine Awards.
